Breaking Through Small Talk

Emilie at Puttylike talks about small talk, something I can’t stand, and ways to go beyond it into deeper conversations. Here’s what she says stops us from getting into the personal things that make conversation great:

With new people, you worry about the impression you’re making. You’re not sure if the person is going to judge you or accept you, and so the instinct is to protect yourself by not revealing too much, not allowing yourself to be too vulnerable.

Being vulnerable sucks but it’s the way to better conversations and relationships. I need to practice this more. The times I have made myself vulnerable have been worth it and I haven’t come out hurt by letting my guard down.
