Hold The Light

Michael Schechter at Workflowing:

Rather than obsessing over every detail, I want to obsess over the essence.

Nicely put. Often getting into granular detail–making things pixel perfect or perfectly planned–is just a distraction from more important work. Reality causes this detail to become irrelevant quickly and our sunk time lost. Obsessing over essence can lead to paying attention to minutiae but, when we approach it that way, it’s to support our pursuit of essence rather than detail for detail’s sake.

It’s most often jargon but ‘scalability’ is important when we talk about what we choose to obsess over. Obsessing over every detail isn’t something that we can maintain across many projects and horizons of focus but when we choose to understand and care deeply about the essence we offer ourselves the chance to obsess appropriately over it.
